Women's lacrosse drops WIAC opener to No. 17 Colorado College

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team dropped its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener to 17th-ranked Colorado College 15-5 on Sunday at the Sonnentag Fieldhouse. The Tigers — the defending WIAC champions — got out to a fast start and the Blugolds couldn't recover.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Colorado College (2-1, 1-0) scored nine goals in the first quarter. The Tigers never trailed in the contest.
  • After falling behind 4-0 in the first five minutes of the game, Paige Kiani (So. - New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) got the Blugolds (3-1, 0-1) on the board with a goal at the 9:55 mark. But the Tigers answered with five consecutive goals across the rest of the first quarter to take an eight-goal lead into the second.
  • The Blugolds held the Tigers to three goals in the second quarter, but couldn't score any of their own. Colorado College led 12-1 at halftime.
  • UW-Eau Claire pulled two back when Devon Crews (Jr. - St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and Victoria Shea (So. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) scored back-to-back goals early in the third quarter. It made it a nine-goal deficit, but the Tigers responded to take a 13-3 lead into the fourth.
  • Ellie Fisher (So. - Stillwater, Minn.) and Crews scored for UW-Eau Claire in the fourth quarter. Reegan Werner (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) assisted both goals.
  • Alexandria Shea (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) made 16 saves in net for UW-Eau Claire. That ranks as the second-most in program history.
  • Crews, Samantha Burns (Sr. - Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Gabi Bullert (Fr. - North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) had five ground balls apiece for UW-Eau Claire.
  • Bullert tied the program record with five caused turnovers.
