Salyers sets career record, Blugolds drop DH to No. 1 Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped its first two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) games of the season to top-ranked UW-Whitewater on Thursday, falling 12-2 (7 inn.) and 10-1. Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) became the Blugolds' all-time leader in runs scored during the doubleheader.

Salyers scored three runs during the day to move his career total to 106. That broke the program record of 104 that Craig Jilek set in 1994.

The doubleheader served as the Blugolds' first meeting with a No. 1-ranked team since the program's return in 2021.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Warhawks (11-0, 2-0) used a pair of three-run innings to run out to a 6-0 lead through three frames in Game 1.
  • The Blugolds (6-7, 0-2) got two runs back when Diego Caicedo (Sr. - Pompano Beach, Fla./Northeast) hit a two-RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, making it a 6-2 game. UW-Whitewater responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth though, and the Blugolds couldn't recover.
  • The Warhawks hit three two-run homers in the first game.
  • Drew Salyers (Sr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) paced the lineup in Game 1 with a pair of hits. He also stole a base.
  • Nicholas Meuser (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) started on the mound and threw five innings. He allowed nine runs and struck out four.
  • Salyers got UW-Eau Claire off to a fast start in the second game, hitting a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The Warhawks took over from there, though.
  • UW-Whitewater pushed across five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer. They added a two-run shot in the fifth, and two more home runs in the sixth.
  • Brennan Cohen (Sr. - Vestavia Hills, Ala.) started and pitched six innings. He allowed seven earned runs and struck out five.
  • Salyers finished the day 3-for-7.
