EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team fell to No. 3 UW-Platteville 72-50 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Event Center. A big Pioneers run early in the second half sank the Blugolds, who were seeking their first win over a top-five opponent since the 2021-22 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Platteville (20-2, 10-1), the WIAC leader, never trailed. The Pioneers started the game with a 12-4 run, and the Blugolds (14-8, 6-5) trailed the rest of the way.
- Despite the slow start, the Blugolds trimmed the deficit to one point later in the first half. A layup by Cade Hall (Sr. - Mauston, Wis.) capped an 11-4 run that brought UW-Eau Claire within 16-15 with 9:20 until halftime.
- UW-Platteville closed the first half on a 10-2 run and carried a 36-26 lead into halftime.
- The Pioneers put the game out of reach with a 16-4 spurt across the first five minutes of the second half. The lead grew to 24 points eventually, and the Blugolds couldn't recover.
- Carter Huschka (Sr. - Farmington, Minn.) had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Blugolds.
- Hall tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Andre Renta (Jr. - Hudson, Wis.) had 14 points.
- The Blugolds shot 38% from the field and 24% from 3-point range. The Pioneers, meanwhile, knocked down 12 3-pointers and shot 44% from beyond the arc.
