Men's Hockey Downed in Season Opening Overtime Thriller

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Wisconsin-Eau Claire (0-1-0) fell to St. Olaf (2-1-0), 3–2, in overtime. The Blugolds tied the game in the second period with a power-play goal but were unable to secure the victory.

The first period began with St. Olaf winning the initial faceoff, setting the tone for competitive play. Despite several attempts from the Blugolds, including a wide shot by Max Ruoho at 18:23, they could not find the net. St. Olaf capitalized on their opportunities, with Kelijah McElroy scoring at 10:16, assisted by Simon Pollock and Tony Leahy. UW-Eau Claire's Kade Peterson received a two-minute penalty for cross-checking at 2:55, but goalie Max Gutjahr successfully defended against multiple shots during the power play, keeping the score tight at 1-0 as the period ended.

The Blugolds took control in the second period, capitalizing on their power play opportunities. At 13:04, Leo Bacallao netted a power-play goal, assisted by Tyler Herzberg and Logan Ganz, breaking the deadlock and putting them ahead. Later, at 2:52, Nolan Grier extended the lead with an even-strength goal, with an assist from Peterson. Despite multiple attempts by St. Olaf, including a shot blocked by Carter Green, the Blugolds maintained their advantage, ending the period with a 2-1 lead.

In the third period, St. Olaf's Carl Ericksen tied the game with an extra attacker goal at 18:12, assisted by Connor McNaughton. Earlier, the Blugolds had several scoring opportunities, with shots from Bacallao and Ganz, but Matthew Malin made crucial saves for St. Olaf. Both teams faced penalties for roughing at 11:08, but UWEC's Danny Reis added to the tension with a hooking penalty shortly after. Despite multiple blocked and saved shots, the game ended in a 2-2 draw, with each team securing a point.

In a tense overtime period, St. Olaf emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over the Blugolds. The period began with Herzberg winning the initial faceoff for UW-Eau Claire and immediately testing St. Olaf's goaltender, Malin, with a missed shot. Trenten Heyde followed with another attempt, but Malin was again up to the task. St. Olaf's Jonathan Panisa broke the deadlock at 3:58, scoring the game-winning goal with an assist from Gunnar Johnson, marking Panisa's second goal of the season.

Bacallao scored once and recorded a power-play goal in his four shots on net. Grier added another goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts with three shots. Peterson posted an assist, providing a key setup in the game. Herzberg also delivered an assist and won 11 of 21 faceoffs, maintaining a 52 percent success rate in the circle.

The Blugolds hold a record of 0-1-0 after their season-opening loss. St. Olaf improves to 2-1-0 overall following the victory.
