EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team knocked off No. 17 UW-Stevens Point 71-66 on Saturday at the Sonnentag Event Center.
Carter Huschka (Sr. - Farmington, Minn.) surpassed 1,000 points in his career as the Blugolds defeated a ranked opponent for the second time this season. It helped UW-Eau Claire climb into third place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Huschka scored 16 points to become the 45th player in program history to surpass 1,000 in a career. He was one of three Blugolds to score in double figures.
- Michael Casper (Sr. - Merrill, Wis.) knocked down five 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a team-high 22 points. Andre Renta (Jr. - Hudson, Wis.) added 20 points and six assists.
- After a back-and-forth first half, the Blugolds (12-6, 4-3) found their separation in the second half. Casper hit a last-second layup to close out the first half with UW-Eau Claire leading 33-31. He followed with even more in the second half, hitting five 3-pointers in a span of less than five minutes to highlight a 16-4 UW-Eau Claire run that put the Blugolds ahead by 17 with 12:24 left.
- UW-Eau Claire remained ahead by double figures until five and a half minutes remained. The Pointers (13-5, 3-4) used a 7-0 run to trim the Blugolds' lead to eight with 5:33 to go. They were unable to pull within five until the very end though, as the Blugolds made nine free throws across the final three and a half minutes to see out the victory.
- UW-Eau Claire shot 58% from the field in the win. They hit 45% of their tries from 3-point range. Defensively, they made six blocks — with four coming from Huschka.
