EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team hammered UW-Stout 81-53 in the first War on I-94 rivalry matchup at the Sonnentag Event Center on Wednesday. The Blugolds turned in a standout defensive performance — forcing the Blue Devils into 22 turnovers — and rode a near-triple double from
Carter Huschka (Sr. - Farmington, Minn.) to knock off the Blue Devils.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (11-6, 3-3) clicked in all facets, shooting 48% on offense and nabbing 17 steals on defense. It was the most steals in a single game for the Blugolds since Nov. 22, 2008, when they also had 17 against Staten Island.
- Huschka poured in a career-high 30 points to pace UW-Eau Claire. He also had nine rebounds and seven steals.
- The game was close for most of the first half until the Blugolds began to pull away across the final three minutes. UW-Eau Claire turned a 27-25 advantage into a 36-28 halftime lead with a 9-3 run to close out the half.
- The Blugolds opened the second half with an 8-1 spurt and the Blue Devils (7-10, 3-3) never recovered. The lead grew as high as 29 as UW-Eau Claire continued to knock down shots and force turnovers defensively.
- Andre Renta (Jr. - Hudson, Wis.) scored the most points of his Blugolds career at 23. He also had eight assists.
- Drew Maloney (Sr. - St. Charles, Minn.) added 12 points and four rebounds for the Blugolds.
- UW-Eau Claire held UW-Stout to a 37% shooting percentage. That included a 23% mark from 3-point range.
