Volleyball victorious in five set thrillers against Bruins and #10 Gusties

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team concluded the Auggie Invite hosted by Augsburg University in stellar fashion on Saturday. The Blugolds battled through two five set thrillers and came away with 3-2 victories over George Fox University and 10th ranked Gustavus Adolphus College.
 
GAME 1 (3-2 vs. George Fox)
  • Bailey Leeke (Jr. – Lakeville, Minn.) and Lili Hagg (So. – Roscoe, Ill.) led the Blugold offense with 16 kills a piece during the five sets.
  • The Blugolds found their success through their attack as they hit above 21.4% in the three sets they won and limited their attacking errors to five or less during those set victories.
  • Hannah Thole (Fr. – West Des Moines, Iowa) continued dishing the ball to the Blugold hitters and recorded 46 assists.
  • UW-Eau Claire tallied 11 service aces with six of them coming from Bailey Leeke.
GAME 2 (3-2 vs. #10 Gustavus Adolphus)
  • UW-Eau Claire broke a three-game losing streak against the Gusties with their first win over GAC since 2021.
  • Mya Cinnamo (So. – Rosemount, Minn.) recorded a career high 27 kills during the UWEC victory. While Cinnamo hit at a 35% rate, Bailey Leeke and Hanne Johnson each had 16 kills to help fuel the offensive firepower.
  • Hannah Thole eclipsed 300 career assists during the second game of the day with a five-set total of 69 assists for a career-high.
  • Kaitlyn Erickson (Fr. – Champlin, Minn.) matched her career high in digs from the first game of the day with 22 in game two. Erickson recorded the game winning ace in the fifth set to seal the 3-2 upset over the 10th ranked Gusties.
Hannah Thole and Bailey Leeke were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances during the three game weekend.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
The Blugolds (4-3-0) will return home and play in their home opener on Wednesday, September 11th against the College of Saint Benedict. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the McPhee Gymnasium.
