EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team hosted their home opener on Wednesday in the McPhee Gymnasium as the Blugolds faced off with the College of Saint Benedict Bennies. UW-Eau Claire came out swinging with 46 kills and earned the 3-0 sweep in front of their home crowd.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mya Cinnamo (So. – Rosemount, Minn.), Hanne Johnson (Jr. – Grantsburg, Wis.) and Bailey Leeke (Jr. – Lakeville, Minn.) all combined for 36 as the Blugolds offense found their groove all night.
- After a five-point run to end the first set, Eau Claire hit at a 42.9% attack rate to claim the second set, 25-18.
- Despite facing set point late in the third, the Blugolds went on a 4-1 run to seal the 3-0 sweep. Hannah Thole (Fr. – West Des Moines, Iowa) had 36 assists, while Kaitlyn Erickson (Fr. – Champlin, Minn.) grabbed 17 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Blugolds (5-3-0) will stay at home and kick off their annual Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament presented by BSN SPORTS/Nike on Friday, September 13
th against Colorado College. The tournament will be held in the brand new Sonnentag Event Center as Blugold Volleyball will be the first athletic team to host competition in the new facility.
