Blugolds complete Kentucky trip with a pair of sweeps

LEXINGTON, Ky. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team hit the road this weekend to play in the Transy Invite hosted by Transylvania University. With strong storms mixing up the Blugolds original schedule, Eau Claire faced off with a pair of schools from Ohio, Mount St. Joseph and Mount Union. UWEC played consistent and effective volleyball during both Saturday games to earn a pair of 3-0 sweeps.
 
GAME 1 (3-0 vs. Mount St. Joseph)
  • Despite finding themselves down early, the Blugolds found a string of four point runs in the first set to earn the 25-19 victory. Eau Claire ended the first set hitting at a .344 rate to establish momentum during the neutral site competition.
  • Bailey Leeke (Jr. – Lakeville, Minn.) and Abby Stanwood (Jr. – Excelsior, Minn.) led the attack with 25 combined kills on 56 attempts. While the offense clicked, Kaitlyn Erickson (Fr. – Champlin, Minn.) and Mya Cinnamo (So. – Rosemount, Minn.) held down the defense with 19 combined digs.
  • Elli Amjadi (So. – Vernon Hills, Ill.) added the the Blugold attack from the service line as Amjadi had a season high three service aces. On 52 reception attempts, UW-Eau Claire tallied just three reception errors during the 3-0 victory.
 
GAME 2 (3-0 vs. Mount Union)
  • UW-Eau Claire kept their form from the first game into the second game as the Blugolds recorded a .431 hitting percentage with their 53 kills. Bailey Leeke and Abby Stanwood once again led the offense with 29 combined kills as Mya Cinnamo added 8 of her own.
  • Ella Kiebel (Jr. – Maple Lake, Minn.) was pivotal in the Eau Claire attack recording a season high 42 assists during the three sets of play. Kiebel captured 32 helpers in the first game of the day to bring her career total to 590 assists.
  • Defensively, Sophia Brown (Sr. – Colgate, Wis.) and Makina Larson (So. – Carver, Minn.) tallied solo blocks as Eau Claire had six total blocks during the contest.

The Blugolds (11-4-0, WIAC 1-1) will jump back into Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Friday, October 4th when they travel to UW-Whitewater. First serve at the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m
