EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The 10
th ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team was back at home on Saturday for another nonconference matchup. The Blugolds faced off with Augsburg University in a regional battle between two teams in the top of their respective conferences. Despite conceding the first goal, UW-Eau Claire scored once in each half and dominated the Auggies for 70 minutes to earn the 2-1 home victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening goal for Augsburg came from a stellar shot from 30 yards that found the top left corner of the net and put the Blugolds down 0-1 in the 20th minute. The early tally would be Augsburg lone shot on goal as Eau Claire locked down their defense allowing no other shots on goal.
- Owen Backus (Fr. – Elkhorn, Wis.) found the equalizer for UWEC in the 36th minute by slotting home a loose ball in the 18 yard box for his third goal of the season. Nathan Donovan (Sr. – Hazel Green, Wis./Wahlert Catholic) and Noah Malcook (So. – Fitchburg, Wis./Oregon) earned assists on the tying goal in the first half.
- As both team continued to battle, neither side could find the back of the net as UWEC tallied 15 shots on goal and were only rewarded twice.
- The game winning goal came in the 84th minute as Carson Kowalski (Jr. – Mudelein, Ill.) connected with a ball off a corner kick with his head and found the Blugolds' second goal of the evening. Kowalski's third goal of the season was also his third game winning goal in a Blugold kit as Alvaro Alanis (Fr. – Aurora, Ill./Marmion) was credited with the lone assist.
