GETTYSBURG, Pa. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team continued play in the Battlefield Classic on Saturday with a pair of matches against Gettysburg University and Dickinson College. After coming up short in a five-set thriller with the host team, the Blugolds swept the Red Devils in straight sets to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record.
GAME 1 (2-3 vs. Gettysburg)
- The Blugolds jumped out to a big 2-0 set lead thanks to Bailey Leeke's (Jr. – Lakeville, Minn.) 14 kills in just two frames. Leeke finished the game with a career high 25 kills.
- UW-Eau Claire found success from the service line in the second set as Bailey Leeke and Hannah Thole (Fr. – West Des Moines, Iowa) each had two service aces and Norah Erickson (So. – Norwood Young America, Minn.) had one of her own as UWEC recorded ten total.
- Eau Claire surpassed 30% attacking rates in their two set victories, but they fell below 25% in the final three sets they fell in.
- The fifth and final tiebreaker set held three different lead changes. The two teams were tied at 9-9 before the Bullets outran the Blugolds with a 6-3 run.
GAME 2 (3-0 vs. Dickinson)
- The Blugolds closed out the tournament weekend with a lopsided victory over Dickinson College. This was the first time the two teams met in program history.
- Lilli Hagg (So. – Roscoe, Ill.) led the Blugolds with 12 kills on 16 attempts. Hagg also collected 14 total points and recorded the lone solo block of the contest.
- Hannah Thole finished the day with 77 assists as the Blugolds lone setter.
- Abby Stanwood (Jr. – Excelsior, Minn.), Bailey Leeke, Mya Cinnamo (So. – Rosemount, Minn.), and Kaitlyn Erickson (Fr. – Champlin, Minn.) combined for 13 of the teams 15 total service aces.
- UW-Eau Claire never trailed the Red Devils during the 3-0 sweep.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Blugolds (2-2-0) will return to Eau Claire and gear up for another road tournament on September 6th and 7th at Augburg University. UWEC will face Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday and George Fox and Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday.
