EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The sixteenth ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team kicked of the 2024 season on Friday afternoon with a home contest against Edgewood College. UW-Eau Claire kept the pace of their historic season a year ago and picked up the 1-0 victory over the Eagle on a goal off a set piece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior transfer Carson Kowalski (Jr. – Mundelein, Ill.) recorded his first goal in a Blugold kit on a rebound off the crossbar for the game's first and only goal at the 6:31 mark.
- UWEC's reigning leading scorer Nathan Donovan (Sr. – Hazel Green, Wis.) was credited with the primary assist after ringing the crossbar on the initial throw in from Jacob Sampson (Sr. – McFarland, Wis.).
- Sam Lynch (Sr. – Verona, Wis.) and Porter Ball (Sr. – Minneapolis) tallied two shots on goal each to lead the Blugold attack.
- Mark Belknap (Sr. – Anoka, Minn.) and Spencer Banks (Sr. – Stevens Point, Wis.) combined for the team shutout as Belknap made three saves and Banks made a crucial one on the goal line right before the end of regulation.
- Mark Belknap received the victory on the day and begins the season 1-0-0.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Blugolds (1-0-0) will be back at home on Sunday, September 1st for a nonconference matchup with Macalester College. Kickoff at Simpson Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.
