Blugolds drop doubleheader to UW-La Crosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team dropped a pair of games to UW-La Crosse on Friday at Carson Park, 11-1 in seven innings and 10-2.

The Blugolds took a lead to start the day in Game 1, but the Eagles took control from there. UW-Eau Claire plated a run in the bottom of the first inning on a UW-La Crosse error to go ahead 1-0, but the Eagles broke things open with five runs in the third. UW-Eau Claire never recovered and finished the game with four hits. Meanwhile, the Eagles scored in every inning after the second and tallied 13 hits.

Drew Salyers (Jr. - Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) led the Blugolds with a single, stolen base and a run scored in Game 1. Nicholas Meuser (Fr. - Burnsville, Minn.) pitched four innings on the mound and struck out three.

Game 2 saw the Eagles race out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Blugolds pushed back in the fourth, plating a pair of runs on an RBI fielder's choice by Austin Buck (So. - Afton, Minn./Stillwater) and a UW-La Crosse error to make it 5-2. They didn't score again though, and got their first and only hit of the contest in the bottom of the seventh when Eli Keirstead (Fr. - Savage, Minn./Burnsville) singled.

Xavier Estrada (Jr. - Bonita Springs, Fla.) made his first start of the season and worked 4.2 innings. He held the Eagles to four earned runs and struck out five. Ty Schafer (So. - Hoffman Estates, Ill./Saint Viator) threw 4.1 innings in relief and held the Eagles to no earned runs while striking out one.

The series will resume on Saturday, May 4, with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. at Carson Park. It will be the Blugolds' season finale. The team will host Senior Day and Alumni Day at Carson Park.
