KENOSHA, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team overturned a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Carthage 15-14 on Wednesday.
Victoria Shea (Fr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) scored the game-winner with 2:47 remaining to give the Blugolds their seventh consecutive victory.
The Blugolds trailed 12-8 early in the fourth, but outscored the Firebirds 7-2 the rest of the way to seal the come-from-behind win. Shea scored three goals in the final 12 minutes of the game to help spark the rally.
Alexie Romanelli (Jr. - Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) led UW-Eau Claire (7-1) with four goals and five points.
Reegan Werner (So. - Farmington, Minn.) and
Lily Zygowicz (So. - Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) added four points apiece.
The Blugolds led for most of the first half, outscoring Carthage (6-4) 4-2 in the first period and entered halftime with an 8-7 lead. The Firebirds mounted a rally of their own in the third quarter though, holding UW-Eau Claire off the board while scoring four goals to surge ahead 11-8. They tacked on another goal early in the fourth, but it set the stage for the Blugolds' comeback.
UW-Eau Claire held a 44-33 advantage in shots, led 38-25 on ground balls and 19-10 on draw controls.
Alexandria Shea (Jr. - Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) made eight saves in goal.
The Blugolds will be part of some history later this week when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado. They take on 24th-ranked Colorado College on Friday, April 5, with a 4 p.m. Central time start. It will be the first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) game the UW-Eau Claire women's lacrosse program has ever played. The WIAC began sponsoring the sport this spring.
