Blugolds best Pointers for 1st WIAC victory

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team cruised past UW-Stevens Point 18-5 on Saturday at Simpson Field to earn the program's first-ever Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory. The Blugolds established a running clock by the end of the first half and never looked back in the win.

UW-Eau Claire (9-3, 1-2) scored three times in the first 90 seconds of the game and cruised from there. Reegan Werner (So. - Farmington, Minn.) led the way with four goals, and Lily Zygowicz (So. - Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) and Devon Crews (So. - St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) added four points each for the Blugolds.

The Blugolds raced out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and carried a 13-2 lead into halftime. The Pointers scored late in the first quarter and early in the second, but that was all the Blugolds surrendered in the opening half. The lead grew as high as 14 in the second half.

Nine different players scored for UW-Eau Claire, with seven notching multi-goal games. Samantha Burns (Jr. - Mahtomedi, Minn.), Alexie Romanelli (Jr. - Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), Crews, Jess Stiller (Fr. - Evergreen, Colo.), Capri Meyer (Fr. - Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and Peyton Gullickson (So. - Rosemount, Minn.) all scored two goals each.

Meyer and Romanelli had three points each. Alexandria Shea (Jr. - Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) earned the win in goal by making six saves.

UW-Eau Claire held a 41-15 advantage in shots and 33-20 in ground balls. The Blugolds won 19 of 26 draws.

The Blugolds recognized four seniors prior to the game with a Senior Day ceremony: Jena Salwasser (Sr. - Cottage Grove, Minn./Park), Megan Madsen (Sr. - Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), Emma Tritschler (Sr. - Eagan, Minn./Eastview) and Sara Scott (So. - Grand Rapids, Minn.). All four are competing for the Blugolds for the final time this spring.

The Blugolds will return to action on Saturday, April 20, with a road game at UW-Stout. Game time is 1 p.m. in Menomonie.
