MENOMONIE, Wis. (blugolds.com) —
Alexie Romanelli (Jr. - Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) became the first player to score 100 career goals for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stout 21-7 on Saturday at Nelson Field. Romanelli scored four times to bring her career total to 100 and is now up to 25 scores this season.
Romanelli was part of a trio of Blugolds who scored four times against the Blue Devils.
Samantha Burns (Jr. - Mahtomedi, Minn.) and
Victoria Shea (Fr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) also struck for four goals, with Burns' performance bringing her career total up to 97 goals. Shea and
Lily Zygowicz (So. - Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) shared the game high with six points each. Zygowicz passed six assists to bring her season tally to 43, which is nearly double the previous season record of 22 and puts her among Division III's leaders in that category.
UW-Eau Claire (10-3, 2-2) had little trouble pulling away on Saturday. The Blugolds led 3-2 after the first quarter, but broke free by outscoring the Blue Devils (3-10, 0-5) 10-1 in the second period. The second quarter featured three goals from Burns and five assists from Zygowicz.
The Blugolds continued to pull away with six more goals from six different players in the third quarter. It put them ahead 19-4 entering the fourth period and iced the game away.
Alexandria Shea (Jr. - Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) played all 60 minutes in goal and made eight saves to secure the win.
Peyton Gullickson (So. - Rosemount, Minn.) scored three goals for the Blugolds, and
Reegan Werner (So. - Farmington, Minn.) added two goals and an assist.
The Blugolds fired off 45 shots in the win, which ties for the fourth-most in a single game in program history. UW-Eau Claire had 33 ground balls and won 21 of 30 draws.
UW-Eau Claire will look for a third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win when it travels to UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, April 24. Game time is 7 p.m.
