STEVENS POINT, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's tennis team prevailed in its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener on Friday, defeating UW-Stevens Point 8-1 on the road. The Blugolds won all six singles matches and took two of three doubles contests.
Four Blugolds won in straight sets in singles play.
Otto Schluter (Jr. - Henfield, England) won 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the No. 3 match. Pablo Rincón (Fr. - Bogotá, Colombia) prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.
Ethan Wurtzel (Sr. - Menomonie, Wis.) triumphed 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 match, and
Ryan Fonseca (Sr. - Andover, Minn.) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
Hunter Roseth (Jr. - Lakeville, Minn./South) and
Demetri Bush (Sr. - Edina, Minn./Duluth Marshall) won the top two singles matches in three sets. Roseth won 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, while Bush won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Wurtzel and Rincón teamed up to win 8-5 in No. 2 doubles, and Fonseca and Schluter won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
The Blugolds will continue their WIAC campaign on Saturday, April 13, when they host UW-Whitewater. Matches will be played at Eau Claire Memorial High School beginning at 1 p.m.
