EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team dropped the first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest ever played at Simpson Field on Wednesday, falling to UW-River Falls 18-12.
Samantha Burns (Jr. - Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored three goals to surpass 100 for her career, becoming the third player in program history to achieve the feat.
Burns earned her 100th career point with a goal at the 5:10 mark in the second quarter. She added two more goals the rest of the game to bring her career goal total up to 91.
After falling into an early deficit, the Blugolds (8-3, 0-2) rallied to make it a one-goal game in the second period before the Falcons pulled away the rest of the way. UW-River Falls (8-3, 2-0) had raced out to an 8-4 lead just past the midway point of the second quarter. However, a goal by Burns started a run of three straight scores for the Blugolds to make it an 8-7 game with two and a half minutes left in the opening half.
UW-River Falls clamped down from there though, outscoring UW-Eau Claire 10-5 the rest of the way. A 4-0 run across the end of the third quarter and into the fourth built a six-goal lead and the Blugolds couldn't recover.
Reegan Werner (So. - Farmington, Minn.) led the Blugolds with five points, increasing her season tally to 43. Burns and
Jess Stiller (Fr. - Evergreen, Colo.) finished with three goals each, and
Ella Novak (Jr. - Columbia, Md.) added two goals.
Alexandria Shea (Jr. - Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) made 10 saves in goal.
The Blugolds will be back at home on Saturday, April 13 with a home game against UW-Stevens Point. Start time is 2:30 p.m. at Simpson Field.
