MENOMONIE Wis. (blugolds.com) - It was just another day of national marks and personal records for the UWEC track and field teams this past Friday at the UW-Stout Quadrilateral. With a total of 14 event wins, the Blugolds were their dominant selves throughout the day.
Sam Verkerke and
Mason Shea got the ball rolling with a 1-2 finish in the men's mile, running times of 4:09.99s and 4:10.61s. These marks will place the two highly in the nation but they will look to improve their times at the WIAC Championships later this month. Anna Scheuth took the crown in the 800m run, with a time of 2:17.73s.
Josiah Ziebell, usually a 400m runner, turned some heads in the men's 800m run as he recorded a personal best time of 1:56.40s to take the event win. Ava Matecjek rounded out the event winners for the Blugold distance squad with a win in the 5k in a time of 18:09.40s.
Several freshman performances on the day showed that the future of Blugold sprinting is secure and very promising.
Hope Schueller, achieved her first college event win, the 60m dash in a time of 7.90s.
Michaela Dick also won her first college event, the 400m dash, with an impressive time of 1:00.47s. On the men's side,
Izaak Clendenning crossed the line first in the 400m dash in a time of 51.44s followed close behind by fellow freshman sprinters
Jacob Eickhoff and
Jack Schreiber who finished 2-3. This freshman class is showing some serious depth for the Blugold sprinters.
Kayla Behnke achieved a personal record and event win in the women's weight throw with a huck of 18.22m. She's part of a friendly rivalry with teammates
Raina Stecher and
Teagan Jones, the
former having set the school record in the event last weekend at the Mark Guthrie Invitational. It's a 3-way race to see who can be atop the record board by the end of the season and the trio have dominated the field in every meet so far this season.
Adam Strouf won the men's shot put with a throw of 17.65m, also placing second place in the men's weight throw.
Soren Johnson threw a huge personal record (16.13m) and is now the 4th Blugold men's thrower to be ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
