WHITEWATER, Wis. (
www.blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's and women's track & field teams traveled East on Friday for day one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championships. The opening day showcased plenty of Blugolds on the on the podium as the women sit in second place tied with UW-Oshkosh with 39 points and the men sit in third place with 45 points.
Yakob Ekoue (Sr. – Hopkins, Minn.) was the lone WIAC Champion on day one for UWEC as both teams combined for eight top-3 podium finishes. Ekoue took home the crown in the men's shot put with a throw of 17.77m.
Gage Stankiewicz (Jr. – Esko, Minn.) was close behind Yakob during the event as Stankiewicz earned a second-place finish in the shot put with a 17.10m throw.
Kevin Eisenzimmer (Sr. – Mineral Point, Wis.) also earned a 2
nd place finish on day one as he ran the 400m in 49.37 seconds. The women's distance medley relay found themselves on the podium as
Mikayla Hady (Sr. – Mount Auburn, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin), Mya Cinnnamo (Fr. – Rosemount, Minn.),
Paige Morrell (Fr. – Greenville, Wis./Hortonville), and
Reagan Zimmerman (So. – Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie East) finished their race in 12:20.58 and earned the relay team a second-place finish.
Ayden Fleeharty (Senior, Viola, Wis./Kickapoo) rounded out the top-3 finishes for the Blugolds as she reached a personal best 3.82m on the women's pole vault and placed 3
rd amongst 20+ competitors.
After one day of multi events,
Max Foland (Jr. – Middleton, Wis.) currently leads the heptathlon with 2930 points with big wins in the 60m dash and the shot put.
Jack Campbell (So. – Reedsburg, Wis.) currently sits in fourth place with 2724 points after a top-3 finish in the shot put.
The Blugolds will be back at Kachel Fieldhouse on the campus of UW-Whitewater on Saturday, February 24
th. First events are scheduled for 10 a.m.
