EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team outlasted UW-Superior 81-75 in overtime on Saturday at the Sonnentag Event Center. After the Yellowjackets forced overtime with a buzzer beater at the end of regulation, the Blugolds responded in the extra period to pick up a fifth consecutive win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a game full of momentum swings, UW-Eau Claire (6-3) had the most important one. The Blugolds outscored the Yellowjackets 13-7 in overtime, scoring their final seven points of the game at the free throw line.
- A hot start to the game saw the Blugolds get out to a 12-point lead across the first five minutes. UW-Superior slowly whittled away at the deficit though, and rallied to lead 39-35 at halftime. The Yellowjackets ended the half on a 14-2 run across the final five minutes.
- UW-Superior stretched its lead to eight with 10 minutes left in regulation, but an 8-0 Blugold run that featured five points from Andre Renta (Jr. - Hudson, Wis.) erased the deficit. The two teams went back and forth from there. Cade Hall (Sr. - Mauston, Wis.) made a basket with one minute left to put UW-Eau Claire ahead 68-66, but a UW-Superior tip-in at the buzzer forced overtime.
- A 5-1 run late in overtime helped make the difference for the Blugolds. The Yellowjackets pulled within two of the lead with 28 seconds left, but were forced to send the Blugolds to the free throw line to try to extend the game. UW-Eau Claire went 4 for 4 at the stripe in the final 25 seconds to ice the game away.
- Hall finished with a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. It was his fifth consecutive double-double.
- Carter Lichtsinn (Jr. - Olathe, Kan./Olathe West) scored a season-high 17 points and dished five assists. Carter Huschka (Sr. - Farmington, Minn.) had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Renta finished with 14 points and five assists.
- The Blugolds shot 48% from the field and made 13 of 15 free throw attempts. They out-rebounded the Yellowjackets 37-30.
