EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire football team saw its upset bid come up short in a 42-31 defeat to No. 9/13 UW-Oshkosh on Saturday at Carson Park.
Isaac Garside (Sr. – Bonduel, Wis.) broke the program record for career receptions as the Blugolds went toe-to-toe with the highly ranked Titans, but UW-Oshkosh was able to pull away down the stretch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Garside hauled in eight catches to bring his career total to 180, breaking Matt Evensen's record of 176 that had stood since 2006.
- The senior receiver helped the Blugold offense fire on all cylinders, particularly in the first half. UW-Eau Claire (2-6, 1-4) scored 24 points across the first two quarters and was well within striking distance at halftime, trailing 28-24.
- A trio of touchdown runs, including two from Sam Schradle (Jr. – Cumberland, Wis.), helped the Blugolds establish a foothold in the first half. Schradle scored early in the first quarter to put the Blugolds ahead, and Jacob Donohue (So. – Grayslake, Ill./Grayslake North) added a 15-yard scoring run early in the second quarter to make it a 14-14 game.
- The Titans scored a go-ahead touchdown pass two minutes after Donohue's score, but Schradle helped tie the game again with his second touchdown run of the day at the 2:37 mark of the second quarter. UW-Oshkosh (6-2, 4-1) scored another touchdown with 1:13 to go, but Connor Radaj (So. – Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) made it a four-point game with a 33-yard field goal as time expired in the opening half.
- UW-Oshkosh pulled away for good in the second half, scoring a touchdown run in both the third and fourth quarters to go ahead 42-24. Garside hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Harry Roubidoux (Sr. – Winneconne, Wis.) with six minutes to go, but the Blugolds couldn't pull any closer.
- Garside finished with 83 receiving yards. After breaking the career receptions record, he's also closing in on the all-time receiving yards record. His total stands at 2,235 yards – just 113 shy of the record set by David Goodman from 2008-11.
- Landon Tonsager (So. – Eagan, Minn.) had six catches for 81 yards. Roubidoux completed 31 of 48 passes for 293 yards. With nine more completions, he would break UW-Eau Claire's all-time completions record. He has already attempted more passes than any other player in Blugolds history.
- Demetrius Bergmann (Fr. – Pepin, Wis.) led the ground game with 57 rushing yards on 16 carries.
- Defensively, Jack Scheldroup (Fr. – Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) had a fumble recovery and an interception. Brady Hoffner (Jr. – Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) had a team-high seven tackles.
- The Titans outgained the Blugolds 455-388 in total yardage.
