MENOMONIE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The eighth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team hammered UW-Stout 7-1 on Saturday at Nelson Field.
Andrew Phillips (So. – Libertyville, Ill.) scored his first career goal and later turned it into his first career hat trick as the Blugolds moved to 2-0-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (11-1-3, 2-0) held a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half, but scored the final five goals of the game to win handily.
- Sean Redmond (So. – Lebanon, Tenn.) got UW-Eau Claire on the board in the 19th minute, and Noah Malcook (So. – Fitchburg, Wis./Oregon) doubled the lead with a strike of his own 14 minutes later.
- The Blue Devils pulled one back with a goal in the 35th minute, but the Blugolds took over from there. Phillips scored the first goal of his career just before halftime, and then finished off a hat trick with strikes in the 51st and 54th minutes.
- Carson Kowalski (Jr. – Mundelein, Ill.) made it 6-1 with a goal in the 60th minute, and Nathan Donovan (Sr. – Hazel Green, Wis./Wahlert Catholic) finished off the scoring with a goal in the 69th minute.
- Several Blugolds tallied assists. Donovan led them all with three, which was a new career high. Tate McDermott (Fr. – Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) added two assists, and Jacob Sampson (Sr. – McFarland, Wis.) and Alek Laroi (So. – Grayslake, Ill./Libertyville) both tallied single assists.
- The Blugolds set a new program record with 46 shots.

The Blugolds continue WIAC play when they host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, October 26, at Simpson Field. The team will be holding Senior Night and Parents Night with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
