Volleyball knocks off No. 18 UW-Platteville in 5-set thriller

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team went on the road and emerged with a 3-2 victory over No. 18 UW-Platteville on Wednesday in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. The Blugolds ran their win streak to four with their third win over a ranked opponent in the last seven days.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blugolds (15-6, 2-2), who received votes in the latest AVCA national poll, held off the 18th-ranked Pioneers 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 15-3.
  • It was generally smooth sailing early on for UW-Eau Claire, who took the first two sets. The Blugolds trailed 18-14 in the first set, but a 10-1 push propelled them into the lead before they clinched the set on a kill by Mya Cinnamo (So. - Rosemount, Minn.).
  • UW-Eau Claire got out to an 18-11 lead in the second set with help from kills by five different players. The Pioneers managed to close the gap and tie the score at 22, but Darienne Andre (Jr. - Lakeville, Minn./Rosemount) and Bailey Leeke (Jr. - Lakeville, Minn./North) both hit kills to help the Blugolds hold on and grab a two-set lead.
  • UW-Platteville rallied to extend the match in the third, reversing a 19-14 deficit with a late 7-1 run to force a fourth set. Another late run by the Pioneers in the fourth set sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
  • The Blugolds seized control in the final set to clinch the match, scoring the first five points of the game as well as the final seven. UW-Eau Claire registered a .333 attacking percentage in the final set.
  • Leeke tallied a team-high 20 kills. Ella Kiebel (Jr. - Maple Lake, Minn.) passed 51 assists, and Abby Stanwood (Jr. - Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) made 25 digs.
