Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. (Blugolds.com) - Cory Sartorelli (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North) tied a school record with six touchdowns today as the UW-Eau Claire football team defeated Hope College (Mich.) 52-45 in double overtime at Holland Municipal Stadium.
All six of Sartorelli's touchdowns came on the ground. After opening the day's scoring with a three-yard touchdown run, Sartorelli added another later in the first quarter from 65 yards out. A season ago against Hope, he finished the game with four touchdowns, including one touchdown scamper of 91 yards, the second longest rush from scrimmage in Blugold football history. The six touchdowns today tied for most in a single game with Chad Hoiska's six against Oshkosh on November 8, 1997. Sartorelli finished the game today with two more touchdowns in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth.
Neither team could shut down the other's offense, and only four times during regulation a drive ended without points going on the board. Two times were due to the end of half, while Hope turned the ball over on downs once and the Blugolds punted once. The Blugolds scored on every one of their possessions heading in to the fourth quarter.
The Blugolds led almost the entire game, but Hope took the lead once with 6:14 remaining to be played at 38-37. The Blugolds scored once more to make the score 45-38 before the Flying Dutchmen tied it up with 17 seconds remaining. The Blugolds took a knee after getting the ball back to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, Hope was unable to score after getting the ball first and the Blugolds had an opportunity to win it. On a fourth-and-goal, the Blugolds tried a field goal from 24 yards out, but Spencer Jacobson (Fr.-Platteville, Wis.), who made a 32-yard field goal earlier in the game and five extra points, sent the ball wide right and the game into the second overtime.
With Eau Claire getting the ball first in the second OT, the drive started out rocky with a rush for loss, a sack and an incomplete pass. However, on fourth-and-18, Kyle Paulson (Sr.-Amery, Wis.) found David Goodman (So.-Neenah, Wis.) in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown pass. Jacobson added the PAT and the Blugolds were back up 52-45. Hope needed the touchdown to stay in the game but could only get nine yards on its possession after the Blugolds' Bryant Dorsey (Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) and Andy Neumann (So.-Germantown, Wis.) stuffed the Flying Dutchmen on fourth-and-one to end the game.
Sartorelli finished the game with 180 yards rushing on 33 attempts to lead Eau Claire while Spencer Kehoe (Sr.-Clear Lake, Wis.) led the receivers with nine catches for 108 yards. Paulson finished the day with 221 yards passing (17-for-23) while the Blugolds racked up 450 yards of total offense.
The Flying Dutchmen finished the game with 389 yards of offense. Tim Elzinga led Hope with 92 yards rushing on 24 carries while Kyle Dietrich caught eight passes for 112 yards to lead the receivers. Quarterback Chris Feys finished with 222 yards passing, going 19-for-29.
On the defensive side of the ball, Dorsey, Ryan Leis (Sr.-Alma Center, Wis./Lincoln) and Mark Bader (Jr.-Burnsville, Minn.) led the Blugolds with nine tackles. Kyle Warren led the Flying Dutchmen with 12.
The Blugolds are now 2-1 on the season while Hope drops to 0-3. The last time the Blugolds played in a double overtime contest was October 22, 2005 when they beat UW-La Crosse 27-20. Eau Claire is now 8-7 all-time in overtime games.
The Blugolds will have next weekend off before opening conference play against UW-Stevens Point in the Spud Bowl on October 3. Action will get underway at 1 p.m. at Goerke Field in Stevens Point.
