Football Loses to I-94 Rival UW-Stout

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire football team was unable to stop UW-Stout's offensive attack and fell 36-15 at Carson Park today.

The Blue Devils (5-2, 2-2 WIAC) got out of the gate quickly today, scoring a touchdown on their first possession. Stout added a two-point conversion to go up 8-0. Coming into today, Stout had not scored a touchdown in its last two games.

Eau Claire (3-4, 1-3 WIAC) could not get its offense going and after two drives by the second quarter had just 37 yards. Stout added another touchdown on its first drive of the second quarter and an additional one two drives later to take a 22-0 lead.

The Blugolds finally answered back with a 22-yard field goal and after forcing a fumble on Stout's next drive, the Blugolds were able to put the ball in the end zone to make the score 22-9. After a missed extra point, the score remained the same heading in to the half.

Following halftime Stout once again marched down the field to score after the Blugolds were forced to punt after stalling on the half's opening drive. The Blue Devils' drive after the Blugolds had to punt it away again led to another touchdown and after an extra point the score was 36-9.

The Blugolds added one more touchdown at the end of the third quarter to make the score 36-15 and neither team would put any more points up the rest of the way.

The Blue Devils finished the game with 451 yards of offense (281 rushing and 170 passing) while Eau Claire had 306 (266 passing and 40 rushing).

Kyle Paulson (Sr.-Amery, Wis.) led the Blugolds with 266 yards passing with 21 completions on 41 attempts. Three Blugold receivers racked up 50 or more yards with Spencer Kehoe (Sr.-Clear Lake, Wis./Clear Lake/Winona State) leading the way with 90 yards on five receptions. Cory Sartorelli (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North) finished with 67 yards on the ground.

Leading Stout's rushing attack today was Craig Warminski, who finished with 167 yards on 26 attempts. Ross Carey also had 77 yards. Carey led the Blue Devils with 170 yards passing with 12 completions and 17 attempts.

On the defensive side of the ball, Granger Taft (Jr.-Rosemount, Minn.) led the way for Eau Claire with eight tackles. Andrew Evanoff (Sr.-Plover, Wis./SPASH) finished with two sacks and a total of seven tackles. Stout's Nick Bocik also finished with eight tackles to lead the Blue Devils.

The Blugolds will be on the road next weekend when they travel to Oshkosh to face the UW-Oshkosh Titans. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. Saturday.
