Men's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season

ATLANTA, Ga. - The UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team opened it outdoor season, taking 11th place out of 21 teams, scoring 28 points, at the Emory Invitational here today.

Emory University took first place at the meet, scoring 91 points. Cedarville University scored 88 points for a second place finish, while Shorter College finished behind them with 85. In fourth place was Hope College with 83 points, and Carthage College finished in fifth place with a score of 74.

The field events were where the Blugolds' had their best finishes today. Josh Boehm (Sr.-Mosinee, Wis.) was the highest finisher of the Blugolds, taking second place in the pole vault, with a vault of 14-0 3/4. Also in the field events, Tim Lauer (So.-Whitewater, Wis.) took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 45-6 1/2. Lauer also had a throw of 131-9 in the discus for a seventh place finish, and an eighth place finish in the hammer throw, with a 136-8 toss. Kirk Schmidt (So.-Athens, Wis.) also did well, taking fifth place in the triple jump with a jump of 42-1 1/4. In addition, he finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 20-2 1/2.

In the track events, the highest finish the Blugolds achieved was a sixth place spot by Chris Wirtz (So.-Weston, Wis./Schofield D.C. Everest) in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:03.78. The 4x100 meter relay team also took seventh place today with a time of 43.36. Frankie Adams (Jr.-Burnsville, Minn.) finished in eighth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.30.

The Blugolds will now prepare for the Viking Olympics next Saturday at noon in Rock Island, Ill.
