Box Score WHITEWATER - The 19th ranked UW-Eau Claire football team was unable to produce a lot offense today in their 28-7 loss to No. 10 Whitewater.
In a game that was streamed to a national audience via the internet, the Blugolds had a tough time getting the ball deep into Warhawk territory. The Blugolds could only produce 233 yards of total offense, compared to 425 yards for the Warhawks. The Blugolds only had 28 yards of total offense in the first half.
The game started out as a defensive struggle. Neither team produced much offensively in the first quarter, with both teams trading punts. It wasn't until early in the second quarter that the first score took place when the Warhawks' Lance Douglas caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Jacobs.
With Whitewater driving again, the Blugolds' defense stepped up as Derek Sikora (Sr.-Neillsville, WI) intercepted the Jacobs' pass, ripping the ball away from the intended receiver. However, the Blugolds could not do anything with the football. The Warhawks then scored just before the half, when Jacobs snuck it in from a yard out to give the Warhawks a 14-0 halftime lead.
Whitewater kept the momentum going early in the third quarter when running back Justin Beaver broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run. The Blugolds finally got on the board late in the third when Jesse Krzyzanowski (Sr.-Thorp, WI) hit Tony Hull (So.-Blaine, MN/Spring Lake Park) for a 3-yard touchdown pass.
The Blugolds had some momentum going into the fourth quarter only down by two touchdowns, but a Blugold fumble at midfield ended that. The Warhawks then sealed the deal when Beaver rushed it in from 22 yards out.
Jesse Krzyzanowski threw for 169 yards on 19-38 passing with one touchdown and one interception for the Blugolds. Tony Hull had nine catches for 97 yards and one touchdown. Brent Tieri (Sr.-Rockford, MN) led the Blugolds in tackles with nine.
With the loss the Blugolds fall to a record of 1-3 overall and a conference record of 0-1. The Warhawks improve to 4-0 overall and a conference record of 1-0.
Up next the Blugolds will travel to River Falls to take on the Falcons. The kickoff is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
