Volleyball Season Ends With Loss To Platteville

PLATTEVILLE - The sixth-seeded UW-Eau Claire volleyball team had their season ended with a 3-0 loss to third-seeded UW-Platteville in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals here tonight at Williams Fieldhouse.

Both teams started off slow in the opening game with sub-.200 hitting percentages. The Blugolds forced nine Pioneer errors but Platteville overcame the errors with 18 kills to win the first game 30-26.

The Pioneer offense kicked into gear in the second and third games and Eau Claire couldn't recover. Platteville had hitting percentages of .417 and .439 in the final two games winning 30-24 and 30-26. The Blugolds kept the third game closes with 20 kills and only three errors but it wasn't enough.

Becca Carstensen (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) ended her Blugold volleyball career by leading Eau Claire with 13 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Carly Freiborg (So.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) led with 39 assists while Shanna Berger (So.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) led with 11 digs.

The Blugolds concluded their season with a 20-11 record. Platteville will play second-seeded UW-Stout in the semifinals with UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse facing off in the other game.
