Blugolds and Yellowjackets Battle to Hard-Fought 0-0 Draw

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — UW-Eau Claire played UW-Superior to a 0-0 tie Friday night at Simpson Field. The Blugolds generated a 24-7 shot advantage, including 13 attempts after halftime, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. The contest featured eight cards with UW-Superior notching four yellows and a red card, while UW-Eau Claire added three yellow cards in the draw.

The Blugolds generated the steadier first-half chances but could not break through, putting eight shots toward goal after the 16-minute mark and forcing Luke Lockman into saves on Andrew Phillips and Ramzi Ouro. Charlie Mroz answered with saves on Bryce Boldt and Orlando Fertleman to keep the match scoreless in the opening push. After the Yellowjackets went down a player on Jay'ce Jones' red card in the 18th minute, the Blugolds continued to press with a corner kick and attempts from Malcook and Ouro. Owen Backus added two shots off the bench in the final 11 minutes, while Tobias Volkmann and Carmelo Kasim also had looks before the first half ended scoreless.

UW-Eau Claire facilitated much of the second-half attack, recording 13 shots and four corner kicks but could not break a 0-0 match. Early in the half, Tate McDermott and Malcook had attempts in the opening two minutes, and after the Yellowjackets produced three shots from 55:35 to 56:40, including a Mroz save to keep the match scoreless. McDermott hit the crossbar on a shot in the 59th minute, then the Blugolds built more pressure with corner kicks at 66:07 and 69:05 and shots from McDermott, Sean Redmond and Brady Stamp. The late push included Baylor Denu's saved shot in the 79th minute, McDermott's second shot off the crossbar at 84:11 and attempts by Ouro, Malcook and Volkmann around two late corners. Neither side scored in the second half, and the match finished 0-0.

Mroz recorded a shutout in goal, making three saves over 90 minutes. Malcook led the Blugolds with five shots and put two on goal. McDermott added four shots for the attack.

The Blugolds move to 1-0-1 overall with the Yellowjackets going to 1-0-1 overall.

Up next, the Blugolds soccer team travels to Arden Hills, Minn., to face Bethel University on Monday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. at Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
