WAUKESHA, Wis. — UW-Eau Claire played Colorado Col. to a 2-2 tie Sunday at Schneider Stadium.
Owen Backus scored at 84:35 off an assist from
Noah Malcook, bringing the Blugolds level after the Tigers held a 2-1 lead. The Blugolds finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on goal, while the Tigers had four shots on goal.
Tobias Volkmann put the Blugolds in front at 40:53, scoring after Backus had a shot saved to send the visitors into halftime ahead 1-0. Earlier, the Blugolds created the first attacking action with a corner in the second minute, and
Tate McDermott sent a shot wide in the ninth minute as the visitors pressed early.
Charlie Mroz and the Blugolds defense faced a Tigers chance in the 26th minute, when Zeke Lubin's shot was stopped by a team save, before the Blugolds answered with looks from
Ramzi Ouro,
Elijah Post and
Baylor Denu during a sustained attacking stretch. The half also included a physical spell with yellow cards to McDermott and
Luis Marquez Sedano, but the Blugolds still found the only goal and carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
Backus answered for the Blugolds at 84:35, scoring off Malcook's assist to tie the match at 2-2. Earlier, the Blugolds created pressure with a Malcook shot in the 49th minute, an Ouro attempt saved by Spencer Besselaar at 54:14 and corner kicks at 54:19 and 59:48. The Tigers responded with Connor Salita's goal at 64:07 to make it 1-1, and after Mroz saved a Jack Hilliard shot at 69:23, Hilliard scored at 72:26 to put the Blugolds behind 2-1. After Backus' equalizer, the Blugolds generated three corner kicks and three more shots in the final five minutes, with Denu, Alek LaRoi and
Kyron Pope each forcing saves before the match ended tied 2-2.
Volkmann scored an unassisted goal on his only shot and finished with two points. Backus added a game-tying goal and put both of his shots on frame. Malcook recorded the Blugolds' assist and added one shot. Ouro led the Blugolds with three shots, including one on goal.
The Blugolds move to 4-0-2 overall and the Tigers go to 4-1-1 overall.
Up next, the Blugolds travel to Northfield, Minn., to face Carleton College on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 3:30 p.m. at Bell Field.
