Men's Basketball Drops Tight Contest at Home Against Warhawks

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 76-68 on Saturday in a closely contested conference game at the Sonnentag Event Center. The game featured 15 ties and 13 lead changes, with the Blugolds controlling the paint with 42 points. However, the Warhawks capitalized on their three-point shooting, making 8 of 21 attempts, and sealed the victory with a strong second half.

The game began with UW-Eau Claire establishing an early lead through a quick layup by Xavier Lewis, assisted by Will Boser, just seconds after tip-off. The first half saw multiple lead changes, highlighted by Andre Renta's jumper at 10:04, which gave the Blugolds a slim edge. UW-Whitewater kept pace with effective shooting, including a 3-pointer at 5:17. As the half drew to a close, Roman Richards made two crucial free throws at the 48-second mark, securing a narrow 37-35 lead for UWEC at halftime.

In the second half, the Warhawks seized control with Richie Warren's dunk at the 19:50 mark, leveling the score at 37. The Blugolds responded with a series of layups by Renta and Lewis, establishing a narrow lead. Luke Bara's 3-pointer at 13:40 pushed UW-Whitewater ahead, and they maintained their advantage with multiple baskets. Despite the Blugolds' efforts, including a late 3-pointer by Luke Reder, the Warhawks' consistent scoring extended their lead, culminating in a 76-68 victory.

Renta scored 17 points and added four assists, contributing significantly to the team's offensive efforts. Lewis led the scoring with 18 points while collecting nine rebounds, showcasing his ability to dominate both ends of the court. Tyler Haney added 11 points and recorded six rebounds, providing important support in the paint. Carter Lichtsinn contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, enhancing the team's presence on the boards.

UW-Eau Claire holds a record of 14-9 overall and 3-9 in WIAC play. UW-Whitewater is 17-6 overall and 8-4 in WIAC competition.
