EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Saint Benedict edged the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 1-0 on Saturday at Simpson Field. The decisive goal came in the first half, securing the win for Saint Benedict despite a strong offensive push from the Blugolds, who recorded 17 shots with 9 on target. UW-Eau Claire's goalkeeper tallied six saves, while Saint Benedict's defense maintained a clean sheet with nine saves.
The first half began with the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Eau Claire applying early pressure, demonstrated by a flurry of shots within the first four minutes, including attempts from
Emma Donovan and
Abby Nordquist. Despite consistent offensive efforts, highlighted by
Magnolia Millar Bruzek's shot on goal in the 25th minute, the team was unable to break through Saint Benedict's defense.
Bella Jones made crucial saves in goal, but a 25th-minute goal by Elly Prairie of Saint Benedict, assisted by Regan Melz, gave the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half kicked off with the Blugolds pressing early, as
Mikalyn Hidde tested Saint Benedict's goalkeeper with a shot in the 47th minute, which was saved. Jones stood strong in goal for UWEC, making multiple key saves, including a crucial stop against Emma Johnson's shot in the 69th minute. Despite several offensive pushes, including shots from
Johanna Thompson and
Clara Farley, the Blugolds could not find the back of the net, resulting in a scoreless half.
Jones made six saves over 90 minutes in the match, conceding only one goal. Thompson was active offensively, leading the team with three shots. Hidde contributed with two shots on goal from her forward position. Donovan also generated pressure with three shots during the game.
UW-Eau Claire dropped to 1-4-1 overall following the loss. Saint Benedict improved to 1-4-0 overall with the victory.
