EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team fell to No. 15 Colorado College 21-9 on Saturday in the championship game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament at the Sonnentag Fieldhouse. The Blugolds finished as the tournament runner-up, their best placement in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The 15th-ranked Tigers raced out to an 8-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Their victory gave them a second consecutive conference tournament title.
- Goals by Jess Stiller (So. - Evergreen, Colo.) and Devon Crews (Jr. - St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) made it a 10-4 game late in the second quarter, but the Tigers scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to take a 12-4 halftime lead.
- Two goals from Ellie Fisher (So. - Stillwater, Minn.) and another from Alexie Romanelli (Sr. - Naperville, Ill./Central) trimmed the Tigers' lead to 14-7 midway through the third quarter, but that was as close as the Blugolds would get. Colorado College answered with three unanswered goals and led by at least nine the rest of the way.
- Samantha Burns (Sr. - Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Romanelli led the Blugolds with three points apiece. Fisher, Paige Kiani (So. - New Brighton, Minn./Ironwood) and Reegan Werner (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) added two points each.
- Alexandria Shea (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) had 14 saves in net for UW-Eau Claire.
- The Tigers held a 44-29 advantage in shots.
The Blugolds conclude their season with an 11-7 record. They improved on their finish in last year's WIAC Tournament, where they placed third.
