EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team defeated Hamline University 23-3 on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Fieldhouse. An eight-goal second quarter helped the Blugolds pull away in their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (4-4, 1-1) got eight points from Reegan Werner (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) in the victory. She scored five goals to power the offense, which tallied its second-highest scoring game of the season.
- The game was tied 1-1 after Hamline (2-5, 0-1) scored midway through the first quarter. But a Paige Kiani (So. - New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) goal started a run of 13 consecutive goals for UW-Eau Claire that spanned the rest of the opening quarter and most of the second.
- The Blugolds struck eight times in the second quarter, with Jess Stiller (So. - Evergreen, Colo.) finding the back of the net three times. Samantha Burns (Sr. - Mahtomedi, Minn.) chipped in with two goals in the quarter.
- The Blugolds held the Pipers scoreless in the third and tacked on five more goals of their own. Kiani and Werner scored twice apiece in the third. Werner also scored twice more in the fourth.
- Alexie Romanelli (Sr. - Naperville, Ill./Central) had six points off four goals and a pair of assists. Ellie Fisher (So. - Stillwater, Minn.) added five points off two goals and three assists. Burns, Victoria Shea (So. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail), Stiller and Kiani all finished with three points each.
- Alexandria Shea (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) made eight saves in net to earn the victory.
- The Blugolds went 16 for 16 on clear attempts.
