Blugolds drop ranked clash with Falcons

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team fell to No. 2 UW-River Falls 9-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The 14th-ranked Blugolds took an early lead, but couldn't hold off the Falcons down the stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Quinn Hartmetz (Sr. - Phoenixville, Pa./Gilmour Academy) gave the Blugolds (15-7-0, 7-2-0) the lead less than seven minutes into the first period, scoring off an assist from McKenna Sandberg (So. - Saint Michael, Minn./Rogers). But the Falcons (18-3-2, 9-0-1) scored a tying goal just under four minutes later, and added a second goal with 3:06 left until the first intermission. The score remained 2-1 after the first period.
  • UW-River Falls began to pull away with a four-goal second period. They scored in the first three minutes to make it 3-1 before Ava Bullert (Jr. - North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) converted an assist from Mathilde Vetter (Fr. - Fargo, N.D./Davies) to make it 3-2. The Falcons scored three times across the final 13 minutes of the period though, and carried a 6-2 lead into the third.
  • The Falcons added three more goals in the third period.
  • Tegan Swanson (Fr. - Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 22 saves for UW-Eau Claire.
