Women's basketball tripped up at UW-La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team took a 70-53 setback at the hands of UW-La Crosse on Saturday at Mitchell Hall. The Eagles built a double-figure lead in the first quarter, and the Blugolds couldn't make up enough ground in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-La Crosse (13-8, 5-5) outscored UW-Eau Claire (7-14, 2-8) 18-7 in the opening quarter. The Eagles ended the period on a 13-3 run that spanned nearly six minutes.
  • The Eagles' advantage grew to 15 in the second quarter, but UW-Eau Claire rallied just before halftime to cut the deficit to single digits. The Blugolds ended the half on an 11-5 run to pull within nine at 30-21 at halftime.
  • A 3-pointer from Anna Koth (Sr. - Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) pulled UW-Eau Claire within six of the Eagles early in the third quarter, but UW-La Crosse took over from there. The Eagles immediately answered Koth's 3-pointer with a 12-2 run to establish a 16-point lead. They grew it to 18 by the end of the period, and the Blugolds couldn't recover. The deficit remained in double figures the rest of the way.
  • Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) led UW-Eau Claire with 12 points. Koth finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Kailey Tulachka (So. - Mishicot, Wis.) added nine points.
  • The Blugolds shot 38% from the floor, compared to 42% for UW-La Crosse. The Eagles had a 46-32 advantage in rebounds.
