EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team began their quest for the Commissioner's Cup on Friday as they hosted Northland College in the first game of the Quarterfinal Round. The Blugolds had six different players find the back of the net, including
Max Dronen who tallied a natural hat trick in the first period to help Eau Claire take game one, 8-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (11-14-1, 8-7-0) lit the lamp multiple times in each period in their victory.
- Max Dronen (Fr. – Moorhead, Minn.) found the first three goals of the game to earn his first collegiate hat trick. All three of Dronen's tallies came within an 11-minute span.
- Carter Green (Jr. – Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) and Kade Peterson (So. – West Fargo, N.D.) extended the lead to five goals in the second period with a pair of goals just 12 seconds apart.
- The Lumberjacks (1-25-0, 0-15) answered with their lone goal of the game at the 12:22 mark of the second period.
- UW-Eau Claire regained control in the third period with three more goals to complete the 8-1 win. Max Ruoho (Jr. – Madison, Wis./Vel Phillips Memorial), Connor Szmul (Sr. – Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View), and Dayne Hoyord (So. – Scandinavia, Wis./Stevens Point) all found the back of the net in the final frame. The trio of goal scorers joined two other Blugolds in collecting multiple points on the night.
- Ethan Roberts (Jr. – Cary, N.C./Loomis Chaffee) made 21 saves to earn the victory in net.

The Blugolds will host Northland College in game two of the Commissioner's Cup Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 22, at Hobbs Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
