Women's basketball can't overcome Titans' second-half surge

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team lost to No. 7 UW-Oshkosh 64-42 on Wednesday at Kolf Sports Center. The Blugolds led at halftime, but couldn't stop the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)-leading Titans from surging after the break.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-Eau Claire (8-16, 3-10) rode a big second quarter on its way to a 31-29 halftime lead.
  • The Titans (22-2, 11-2) opened the game with an 8-2 run, but the Blugolds recovered and only trailed 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. UW-Eau Claire surged in front in the second quarter, outscoring the Titans 20-14 in the period.
  • A 14-2 Blugolds run turned a six-point deficit into a six-point lead across a five-minute stretch in the second quarter. Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) and Lucia Hauge (Sr. - Hugo, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran Academy) both hit 3-pointers during that spurt.
  • The Titans took control after halftime, outscoring UW-Eau Claire 35-11 across the third and fourth quarters. UW-Oshkosh held the Blugolds to 13% shooting in the third quarter and 18% in the fourth. The Titans started the half with a 10-0 run and never looked back.
  • Overskei led UW-Eau Claire with 11 points and nine rebounds. Hauge finished with seven points and six rebounds. Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) tallied nine points.
  • UW-Eau Claire shot 30% from the field overall but hit 36% of its attempts from beyond the arc.
