Blugolds fall in round of 32 to Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team fell to Macalester 2-1 on Sunday at Macalester Stadium in the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament Second Round. Eau Claire scored in the second half to briefly level the match, but Macalester secured the victory with a game-winning goal later in the period. The Blugolds' defense faced 12 shots, with their goalkeeper making two saves as their 2025 season came to a close.

The match between the Blugolds and the Scots began with UWEC applying early pressure. In the first minute, Sean Redmond's shot was saved by Macalester's goalkeeper. Ramzi Ouro and Noah Malcook followed with attempts that narrowly missed the target, indicating an aggressive start from UW.-Eau Claire.

As the period progressed, the Blugolds continued to push forward, with Tate McDermott and Ramzi Ouro both taking shots, although they were unable to find the back of the net. Defensively, Charlie Mroz made a crucial save against a shot from the Scots, helping maintain a scoreless half.

The first period concluded with neither team breaking the deadlock, as both sides remained level at 0-0.

After a converted penalty kick by Macalester in the 62nd minute, the second half opened up with a key moment for Eau Claire when Tate McDermott scored an equalizing goal in the 64th minute, assisted by Carmelo Kasim. The visitors maintained pressure, creating several opportunities, including shots from Ramzi Ouro and Elijah Post.

However, the Scots regained the lead in the 81st minute when Macalester found the back of the net off a corner kick. Despite UW-Eau Claire's persistent efforts, including multiple shots and corner kicks late in the game, they could not find another equalizer. The contest concluded with Macalester holding a 2-1 advantage.

McDermott scored one goal from two shots, with one of those shots being on target. Kasim contributed an assist, adding to his team's offensive efforts. Mroz played a full 90 minutes as goalkeeper, making two saves against 12 shots faced. Redmond managed two shots, with one on goal to apply pressure on the opposing defense.

UWEC ends their season with a 13-3-4 overall record. The Scots stand at 17-4-0 overall as they advance to the Sectional Round.
