EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — UW-Eau Claire secured a 2-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Sunday at Simpson Field. The home team took an early lead with two goals in the first half, with one being the game-winner. The Cobbers responded with a goal in the second half but couldn't equalize, despite out-shooting the Blugolds 14-4 in the period.
The first half began with UW-Eau Claire applying early pressure, as
Johanna Thompson and
Sabrina Pickart took multiple shots on goal. Concordia's goalkeeper managed to save several attempts, keeping the match scoreless in the opening minutes. However, the Blugolds broke through in the 23rd minute when
Haley Von Rentzell found the bottom left corner with assists from
Mikalyn Hidde and
Emma Donovan, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
UWEC continued to control the pace, with
Ashley Butler and Hidde attempting shots that kept the pressure on the visitors. In the 43rd minute, Hidde extended the lead with a goal into the bottom right corner, solidifying the Blugolds' advantage. The first half closed with UW-Eau Claire ahead 2-0, maintaining a strong defensive effort while creating scoring opportunities.
The second period began with the Blugolds maintaining a solid defensive stance.
Bella Jones made a crucial save against in the 51st minute keeping the home team ahead.
Savannah Swopes attempted to widen the lead with a shot in the 57th minute, but it went wide. As the period progressed, the Cobbers increased their offensive pressure. Despite this,
Bella Jones again proved vital with a save in the 68th minute from Reese Christ's attempt. However, in the 85th minute, the Cobbers managed to break through with a goal, narrowing the scoreline to 2-1.
UWEC responded with attempts by
Taylor Bembnister and Pickart, yet Concordia's saves held the score. The period concluded with the Blugolds winning 2-1, maintaining their advantage despite the Cobbers' late efforts.
Hidde scored one goal and added an assist, contributing to three points with one shot on goal. Von Rentzell found the back of the net with her only shot of the game.
Emma Donovan tallied one assist, playing a pivotal role in the playmaking efforts.
Sabrina Pickart led the team in shots, taking four attempts with one on target.
Bella Jones, in goal, made two saves while facing 16 shots and secured the win with a 1-0-0 record.
The Blugolds hold a record of 3-11-4 overall on the season and the Cobbers hold a record of 0-11-5.
The Blugolds regular season finale is set for Saturday, November 1 in Platteville, Wis. as UWEC faces UW-Platteville. Kickoff from Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
