Blugolds Stifled by Pointers' Strong Goaltending

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was unable to find the back of the net in a 3-0 defeat to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday at Simpson Field. Despite outshooting UW-Stevens Point with 15 total shots to 18, the Blugolds managed nine shots on goal but couldn't capitalize, as the opposing goalkeeper recorded a shutout with nine saves. UW-Stevens Point's offense was highlighted by a hat trick, which sealed the victory.

The first half began with both teams vying for control, but UW-Stevens Point struck early as Christa Borchardt found the net in the 7th minute, assisted by Cass Klitzke and Sofia Jimenez. UW-Eau Claire responded with attempts from Mikalyn Hidde, Olivia Lukrafka Varassin, and Emma Donovan, all of which were saved by Ainsley Katte. The home team continued to push forward, generating several corner kicks and shots, but could not convert.

Midway through the half, UW-Stevens Point capitalized again when Borchardt scored a penalty kick in the 32nd minute, doubling their lead. Bella Jones made a crucial save against Borchardt later to keep the Blugolds within reach. Despite multiple offensive efforts, including a late shot by Bella Felegy, UWEC ended the half trailing 2-0.

The second half began with UWEC looking to close the gap, but UW-Stevens Point maintained the pressure early on. Bella Jones was active in goal, making crucial saves, including one in the 53rd minute off a shot by Christa Borchardt and another from Piper Hanley in the 56th minute. Despite these efforts, UW-Stevens Point extended their lead to 3-0 in the 65th minute with a goal from Borchardt, assisted by Kayce Wadas.

The Blugolds responded with increased offensive attempts, including shots from Jayda Swopes and Olivia Tompkins. Ainsley Katte of UW-Stevens Point made key saves to preserve their lead. Katarina Charles and Sabrina Pickart also tested the defense with shots on target, but the half concluded with UWEC unable to find the back of the net, closing the match with a 3-0 deficit.

Jones posted five saves in the match, facing 18 shots on goal. Charles recorded one shot, which was on target. Swopes contributed to the team's offensive efforts with two shots, both on goal. Hidde added two shots, with one being on target.

UW-Eau Claire holds a record of 2-10-4 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. UW-Stevens Point stands at 6-4-7 overall and 1-1-3 in conference competition.
