Blugolds fly past Falcons in WIAC road matchup

Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. — UW-Eau Claire defeated UW-River Falls 3-1 on Tuesday at Don Page Arena. Eau Claire won the opening set 25-16, followed by a 25-21 victory in the second set. UW-River Falls responded with a 25-21 win in the third set, but the Blugolds secured the match with a decisive 25-16 win in the fourth set. UWEC recorded 59 kills and 8 service aces, while UW-River Falls managed 54 kills and 5 aces.

Eau Claire took control of the first set with a 25-16 victory over UW-River Falls, fueled by a strong offensive performance. Abby Stanwood led the charge with five kills, while ALex Kiebel contributed with multiple assists, including a service ace that extended their lead. UW-River Falls struggled with errors, committing two service errors early that allowed the Blugolds to maintain momentum throughout the set.

An early lead in the second set by UWEC, was driven by service aces from Stanwood, including a pivotal ace at 25-21 to close the set. Mya Cinnamo contributed with four kills, while the team maintained the advantage by forcing five attack errors from the Falcons. The Blugolds' consistent offense secured the 25-21 set victory while hitting at a 31.4% rate.

In the third set, Eau Claire fell behind early to the Falcons. The visitors capitalized on several attack errors by UWRF, leveling the score at times, with Norah Erickson contributing key kills. However, UW-River Falls maintained pressure with pivotal kills. The set concluded with a 25-21 advantage to the Falcons, despite the Blugolds' efforts to narrow the gap late in the set.

The fourth set opened with a commanding 4-0 UWEC run, capitalizing on UWRF's errors and a service ace by Alex Kiebel. Stanwood led the charge with crucial kills, contributing to a dominant performance that included a service ace and multiple blocks by Cinnamo and Darienne Andre. Despite the Falcons' late rally, UW-Eau Claire closed the set 25-16, securing the victory.

Stanwood led the team with 21 kills and added three service aces, contributing 24.5 points overall. Cinnamo recorded 17 kills and two blocks, finishing with 18.0 points. Alex Kiebel facilitated the offense with 44 assists and collected 17 digs. Kaitlyn Erickson demonstrated defensive skills with a team-high 25 digs and also added one service ace.

UW-Eau Claire holds a 20-2 overall record and stands at 4-0 in WIAC play. The Falcons have a 10-13 overall record with a 0-4 mark in the WIAC.

The Blugolds will return home for their Blugold Alumni Weekend Invitational on Friday and Saturday, October 17th and 18th. UWEC will face Illinois Wesleyan on Friday at 7 p.m. as Eau Claire celebrates senior night.
