Women's Soccer Downed 1-0 Despite Late Offensive Push

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Wartburg edged past the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday at Simpson Field. The decisive goal came in the second half, as Wartburg capitalized on one of its 10 shots on goal. The Blugolds' goalkeeper, Bella Jones, recorded nine saves in the match, but the offense was unable to convert any of its six shots on target.

The first half began with UW-Eau Claire establishing early pressure through multiple corner kicks and attempts on goal. Jones made crucial saves to keep Wartburg from capitalizing on their opportunities, notably stopping shots from Sami Webster and Maya Anderson. Mikalyn Hidde and Jayda Swopes created offensive chances, but Tulla Jensen's saves maintained the stalemate. The half concluded with both teams unable to break through the opposing defenses, ending with a 0-0 scoreline.

The second half began with UWEC looking to change the momentum, holding firm defensively with Jones making key saves, including a stop against Athena Sheets at the 47th minute. Despite UW-Eau Claire's effort, Wartburg broke through with a goal by Webster in the 60th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Blugolds responded with increased offensive pressure, generating several corner kicks and shots, notably from Johanna Thompson and Magnolia Millar Bruzek, but Wartburg's goalkeeper Jensen denied each attempt. The period closed with Wartburg maintaining their narrow 1-0 advantage, despite UWEC's persistent efforts to equalize.

Jones recorded nine saves in the match, facing 16 shots and conceding only one goal. Thompson registered three shots, all on goal, maintaining consistent pressure on the opposing defense. Swopes contributed two shots, with one being on target, from her defensive position. Emma Donovan also added a shot on goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.

UW-Eau Claire holds a record of 1-7-3 this season. Wartburg stands at 5-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
