EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team took its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) loss of the season with a 67-53 defeat at the hands of No. 4 UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Event Center. The fourth-ranked Titans built a lead in the first quarter, and the Blugolds weren't able to make up enough ground the rest of the way to erase the deficit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Oshkosh (13-0, 2-0) outscored UW-Eau Claire (6-7, 1-1) 24-15 in the first quarter. The Titans started the game with an 11-3 run to get ahead early.
- The Blugolds were able to recover, but never took the lead after falling behind. They trimmed the deficit to three points with three and a half minutes left in the first quarter, but the Titans closed the period on a 6-0 run to re-establish a cushion.
- UW-Oshkosh opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to see their lead grow to 13 points, but UW-Eau Claire had an answer. Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North), Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) and Anna Koth (Sr. - Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) all hit consecutive 3-pointers to fuel a 9-0 run that trimmed the Titans' lead to 30-28 with 4:38 left in the first half.
- The Titans closed out the half with a 10-2 run and led 40-30 at the break.
- UW-Oshkosh sealed its victory in the second half, outscoring UW-Eau Claire 15-11 in the third quarter to help put the game out of reach. The Blugolds trailed by double figures the rest of the way.
- Overskei tallied her second consecutive double-double — her fourth of the season — with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Hutchinson added 10 points and three rebounds. Lauren Meudt (Jr. - Waunakee, Wis.) had nine points and six assists. Koth scored eight points.
- The Blugolds shot well at 46%, but the Titans shot 50%. UW-Eau Claire couldn't overcome 23 turnovers as the Titans notched 11 steals.
