Falcons best Blugolds in WIAC battle

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest to UW-River Falls 65-57 on Saturday at Don Page Arena. The Falcons pulled away in the third quarter, and the Blugolds were unable to mount a comeback in the fourth to drop to 1-2 in WIAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After UW-River Falls (9-5, 1-2) got out to a strong start, the Blugolds (6-8, 1-2) rallied in the second quarter to pull back into the game. The Falcons outscored the Blugolds 16-9 in the first quarter, closing the period on a 9-2 run.
  • The deficit grew to 12 early in the second quarter before the Blugolds surged back. A 9-0 UW-Eau Claire run that featured seven points from Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) pulled the Blugolds within three with under five minutes left in the half.
  • UW-Eau Claire closed the first half with a 5-0 run and trailed 30-28 at the break.
  • UW-River Falls outscored UW-Eau Claire 16-11 in the third quarter and saw its lead grow as high as nine. The Falcons took a 46-39 advantage into the final quarter, and pulled away with an 11-2 run to start the fourth. It grew the lead to 16, and the Blugolds couldn't recover.
  • Overskei finished with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists.
  • Jessilyn Ernst (So. - Pardeeville, Wis.) had 10 points and five rebounds. Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) added seven points, surpassing 1,000 in her college career in the process. She scored 800 points while playing at Des Moines Area Community College and now has more than 200 as a Blugold.
  • The Blugolds shot 39% from the field and 29% from 3-point range.

UP NEXT

The Blugolds return home to host UW-Platteville on Wednesday, January 15, at the Sonnentag Event Center. They'll be hosting Youth Night and Team Night during the WIAC contest. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
