EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team couldn't overcome a lopsided third quarter in a 59-48 defeat against UW-Platteville on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Event Center. The Pioneers outscored the Blugolds 21-6 in the third to surge ahead and walk away with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (6-9, 1-3) led entering the second half after a solid performance before the break. The Blugolds opened the game with an 8-2 run and led 15-13 after the first quarter.
- The Blugolds never trailed in the second quarter and opened up a nine-point lead when Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) hit a basket with 1:33 left in the half to make it 31-22 in UW-Eau Claire's favor. The Blugolds led 31-25 at halftime.
- Anna Koth (Sr. - Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) hit a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to put the Blugolds back up by nine, but the Pioneers (8-7, 2-2) held UW-Eau Claire to three points for the remainder of the quarter. They outscored the Blugolds 19-3 across the final six minutes of the quarter to take a 46-37 advantage into the fourth.
- The Blugolds cut the deficit to six with 3:49 remaining, but couldn't get any closer. UW-Platteville finished the game on a 7-2 run.
- Hutchinson and Koth shared the team high with 13 points apiece. Hutchinson also had seven rebounds. Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) added eight points and seven rebounds.
- UW-Eau Claire shot 35% from the floor, including a 25% clip from 3-point range. The Pioneers shot marginally better at 42% overall.

The Blugolds are back at home on Saturday, January 18, when they host No. 15 UW-Whitewater. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Sonnentag Event Center.
