Men's basketball knocks off UW-Oshkosh for first WIAC win

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team knocked off UW-Oshkosh 69-56 on Wednesday at Kolf Sports Center for its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory of the season. The Blugolds rode a huge first half to coast past the Titans, who received votes in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UW-Eau Claire (9-4, 1-1) caught fire toward the end of the first half to pull away from the Titans (9-4, 0-2). The Blugolds outscored the Titans 44-29, with most of the team's scoring coming in the final five minutes of the half.
  • It was a four-point Blugold lead with eight minutes left in the opening half. From there, UW-Eau Claire outscored UW-Oshkosh 24-13 to enter the break with a 15-point lead.
  • Gunnar Tebon (Sr. - Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) had a huge opening half, scoring 21 points to lead the surge. He scored the Blugolds' final 11 points in the half.
  • The Blugolds were lights-out in the first half. They shot 58% from the floor, including an 8 of 12 performance from 3-point range.
  • UW-Oshkosh was unable to recover in the second half. The Blugolds led by double figures the entire period.
  • UW-Eau Claire dominated the glass. The Blugolds out-rebounded UW-Oshkosh 35-28.
  • The Blugolds finished the game with a 51% shooting percentage. They made 52% of their shots from deep.
  • Tebon finished with 21 points. He shared the team high with Carter Huschka (Sr. - Farmington, Minn.), who had 21 points and seven rebounds.
  • Cade Hall (Sr. - Mauston, Wis.) had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Andre Renta (Jr. - Hudson, Wis.) had 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
  • The victory was the first WIAC win of Head Coach Zach Malvik's career.

UP NEXT

The Blugolds, who have won eight of their last nine games, will host UW-River Falls on Saturday, January 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Sonnentag Event Center.
