Blugolds heat up in WIAC-opening victory over UW-La Crosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team put in one of its best shooting nights of the season in a 73-63 victory over UW-La Crosse on Saturday at the Sonnentag Event Center. The Blugolds shot 52% from the field and knocked down 11 3-pointers to defeat the Eagles in their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blugolds (6-6, 1-0) turned in their second-best shooting percentage of the season. They rode a hot night from beyond the arc, with three different players knocking down multiple 3-pointers.
  • Reanna Hutchinson (Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis./North) led the way, tallying 29 points and five rebounds. She finished one point shy of matching her career high. She made five 3-pointers.
  • Kyla Overskei (Jr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) added 17 points and eight rebounds. She shot 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Lauren Meudt (Jr. - Waunakee, Wis.) chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
  • The Blugolds raced out to a 24-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. They shot 69% in the opening 10 minutes, including a 5 of 7 clip from 3-point range.
  • The lead grew to 21 in the second quarter, and UW-Eau Claire eventually took a 43-24 advantage into the locker room.
  • The deficit ballooned to 23 by the end of the third quarter. The Blugolds outscored the Eagles 20-16 in the third period. UW-La Crosse (8-4, 0-1) tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too great to erase.
  • In addition to their hot shooting, the Blugolds dominated the glass. They out-rebounded the Eagles 35-28.
