EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team finished off a regular-season sweep of UW-Stevens Point with a 5-2 victory over the Pointers on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The 13th-ranked Blugolds scored the first four goals of the contest on their way to their third win over the Pointers this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- McKenna Sandberg (So. - Saint Michael, Minn./Rogers) opened the scoring just over six minutes into the game, and UW-Eau Claire (14-6-0, 6-1-0) never looked back. Keira Bolt (Jr. - Boise, Idaho) doubled the lead with 1:47 left in the first period, and the Blugolds entered the locker room with a 2-0 advantage.
- Ava Bullert (Jr. - North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) cashed in on a power play early in the second period to make it 3-0 in UW-Eau Claire's favor, and Madisyn Krumholz (So. - Burnsville, Minn.) struck just two and a half minutes later to stretch the lead to 4-0.
- The Pointers (8-11-1, 2-4-1) scored twice in the space of 19 seconds toward the end of the second period, but it was the only offense they could muster. Lauren Ballinger (Fr. - Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) finished off the scoring with a Blugolds goal near the midway mark of the third period.
- Seven different players had assists for UW-Eau Claire.
- Alexa Backmann (So. - Rogers, Minn.) made 21 saves in net to earn the victory.
- The Blugolds held a 44-23 advantage in shots and successfully killed four Pointers power plays.
